Over the past two years, various public tragedies have put mental illness on the national discussion block. This conversation is incredibly important in America, because as culture we are very undereducated, naive, and unrealistic about solutions. However, it is important to remember many are suffering today and contemplating suicide, glorifying suicide as freedom is cruel and irresponsible. I hate the discussion of suicide being selfish as having an illness is most certainly not selfish, but the opposite of that is not saying that what this brilliant man did was to give himself freedom. The saddest part of severe depression is pushing the concept that there is no escape from the darkness and giving this romantic notions. Be conscious, researched, and empathetic in discussions concerning tragedy, it is far more complex than nearsighted news coverage and uneducated responses.
